Crazy American Fact #18: Until recently, when it was officially declared as English, the United States did not have an official language. I always thought English and Spanish were both the official languages.

New Hampshire

Last weekend Dan, Kevin and I went up to Durham, NH to the University of New Hampshire. We also visited Dan's house in the lovely town of Peterborough, NH and went to the coast at Portsmouth. Most of the places in New Hampshire are named after places in the UK. There's a Manchester, Portsmouth, Dover, Plymouth and Bristol.

The drive there took about 7 hours, going through Massachusetts, and the drive back was about 8, because we went through the mountains in Vermont. Overall, we travelled over 800 miles this weekend.

We did some filming with Dan's video camera and hopefully we'll make something out of that.

There was also over a foot of snow while we were in Durham.

Dan's car. The state slogan for New Hampshire is 'Live Free or Die' which you can see on the license plate of his car.

Durham is lovely.

Snow and Ice

Snow outside the Campus Center.

It's 12 degrees fahrenheit outside, which is apparently -11 degrees Celcius. Brrrrrrr.

Dan and I have been having lunch with a girl called Sarah from our Academic Writing class and her group of friends. They're very cool people. One of the things I like most about this place is the way, even now, I still seem to meet new people all the time. The ballroom dancing has been a cool new experience. This week I went to a swing dance over at Cornell, the other University in the city of Ithaca, which was fun.

Next weekend Kevin, Dan and I are going to New Hampshire to visit Kevin's girlfriend at the University of New Hampshire. It's about a 6 and a half hour drive... but it's going to be fun. I can feel it. I'll take pictures.
Jarhead was also playing at the cinema here, so I went to see that again.

Zack pretends to push this van over a cliff...

Zack and I decided to climb the hill behind the towers again, and go into the woods... I know that's where they dwell, but I really wanted to go to the towns to get medicines...

Crazy American Fact #16: Every state has a nickname. Some of them seem fairly sensible. Maine is 'The Pine Tree State', Arizona is 'The Grand Canyon State' and New York is 'The Empire State'. Others are a little bit weirder... Wisconsin is 'The Badger State', Missouri is 'The Show-Me State' and New Mexico is known as the 'Land of Enchantment'. Source.
